Supporting Critically Ill Children Through Film Children in Need Every day, thousands of children are struck by infections and diseases which require hospitalization frequently for extended periods of time. Not only can these situations be life threatening to the child, but their families are challenged daily by the demanding emotional and financial burdens that come with such illnesses. One of the only outlets for these children and their families during these difficult times is television programming. Studies have shown that when children have a positive outlook on their situation, it can assist with the healing process, proving the old adage that laughter is the best medicine. However, as you know all too well, most of today's shows aren't suitable, positive or uplifting, especially for children. Unfortunately there is little the hospitals can do because all of the financial resources that are available to them must be spent on equipment, medicines, and technology to cure the physical body of the infection or disease. Providing Hope In 1991 a national non-profit organization was formed called The Coalition for Quality Children's Media. The Coalition is committed to providing hope and healing by addressing the emotional wellbeing of these sick children and their families. Armed with the knowledge of the healing power of laughter and faith, they have determined the best way to help is to place a free, on-demand system into each child's room, which contains many hours of appropriate, positive and uplifting films and television shows that the child and family can experience and enjoy together. With over a million childrens' hospital beds nationwide, this is a monumental task but as the saying goes, "many hands make light work." Therefore, the Coalition for Quality Children's Media has partnered with Corporations for Character to raise the necessary funds to implement this program. Corporations for Character facilitates the telephonic fundraising, the free-on-demand system and the films that go into the hospital rooms. Working together, the partnership has allowed corporations and individuals to make a very real and powerful difference in the lives of countless children and their families.
